What is Down’s Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is the most common form of learning disabillity. It occurs around the time of conception giving rise to an extra chromosone in each of the baby’s cells.

This leads to number of physical characteristics which most people with Downs syndrome share, although a person with DS still has physical characteristics from mambers of his/her family.

People with DS all have a certain degree of learning disability.

The degree of disability varies from person to person and it is impossible to tell at birth what degree will be.

In 1959, a french geneticist called Professor Jerome Lejeune discovered that DS was caused by the presence of an extra copy of the chromosone 21, making 47 in all.

A syndrome is a collection of signs or characteristics.The name DOWN comes from the English Dr, John Langdon Down, who described the syndrome in 1866.

There are between 1/2 babies born each day in the UK with DS. Thats an average of 1 baby in 1000 born with the condition.

People with DS dont suffer from it.

Any mum can have a baby with DS. The older mums do have a higher individual chance but most babies are born to young mums.

DS is not a disease.People with DS can expect to enjoy a healthy life of around 60 years plus, with the right support.

Attitude to DS have changed enormously in recent years. There is now a greater awareness that, given the correct levels of support and understanding, people with DS can attain more than had been previously thought and do lead useful and reasonably independent lives.

THERE ARE AROUND 60,000 PEOPLE WITH DOWNS SYNDROME IN THE UK AND MANY MORE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, LETS PUT LANZAROTE ON THE MAP AS WELL AND PROVE WE TO CAN HELP OUR CHILDREN BECOME THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE.
