What About My Fluffy Friends?

Many people bring their pets to Lanzarote when they relocate here (we got ours afterwards… and that’s another story). But obviously you will wish to do the best for your four legged companion.

There are obviously legal obligations, all provided to ensure the health and happiness of your pet.

1. Your cat or dog must be shipped in an IATA approved Air pet travel kennel of the correct size for your fluffy friend. Cats are often collected from the baggage carousel, whereas dogs are normally collected from the office – due to the size of their kennels.
2. You must ensure that you have the relevant Export Health Certificate from DEFRA.
3. You must ensure that cargo space has been reserved with the airline you have chosen, and that this date ties in with all the other documentation.
4. To be on the safe side – book an appointment with your local vet as early as possible to ensure everything is organised.

Once in Lanzarote, there are a number of vets to keep keep your pet in good health. remember that the climate is a lot warmer here than the UK, so ensure that your little one always has plenty of fresh water (changed regularly), and shade that they can escape to when need be. Most animals settle quite well, but if in doubt – always consult a vet.

Hmmm, definately something to think about…I will probably just end up leaving them behind though :-( Thanks for having a look for me though!

  • Hi Johnny.

That’s an interesting one! I’ve had a quick scout about and can’t find a definitive answer. From what I can see – it is possible… and rats (also rabbits, gerbils, hammies etc) they are subject to the same vaccination rules as cats and dogs. There doesn’t seem to be any restriction because of them simply being a “rat”.

To be honest, I would think that the cost would far outweigh the benefits… but although I have had pet rats myself in the past – I wasn’t as attached emotionally to them as I have been to dogs… that’s not to say that you would be as unemotional about it – so I apologise if I have underestimated your bond with them.

I must admit – I’d be asking about the stress on the little beasties… and whether it could cause them extreme upset – but you know your pets better than anyone else.

First stop should be your vet to find out the costs from them… and then speak to the airline to find out their costs too.

    Good luck!

    Elle xx

So a bit different, and I was planning on having them adopted over here anyways…but what about rats? I have 5 little girls that I would love to bring with me, I probably wont end up doing so, but it’s always nice to know just incase I can’t bear to leave them behind…
