Weddings in Lanzarote

Here is a basic guide to being married in Lanzarote. Of course everyone’s circumstances are different – so please always consult the experts before going ahead. This information is not legally binding.

wedding01Civil and religious marriages in Lanzarote
Under Spanish law, both civil and religious weddings are legal. People under 18 are not legally able to marry in Spain.

Civil Marriages: The consent to get married is given to the correspondent officer dependant upon the principles of the Spanish Civil Code. The marriage is solemnized by the Judge in charge of the Civil Registry, by the town Mayor or the officer duly authorised, or by the diplomatic officer of the Civil Registry abroad.

Religious Marriages: Catholic, Protestant and Jewish marriages may be carried out in Lanzarote. The certificate of marriage that the Church issues you after the ceremony must be registered with the Spanish civil registry in order to get an official legal marriage certificate.

Documentation
If you are planning to marry in Lanzarote, please note that you will be required to produce the following documents:

  • Your passport
  • Original birth certificate or an officially stamped auhorised copy
  • Application to marry form
  • Proof that the two parties are single. A form can be obtained from the civil registry of your home country
  • If previously married, the original final divorce decree or death certificate.
  • Certificate of residence: If you are non-resident, you may be able to sign an a document before your consular officer.
  • Certificate of Consular Inscription: This can be gained from your embassy or consulate.

A certificate of baptism is also needed when arranging a Catholic wedding in Lanzarote. The required documentation must be presented to the priest performing the ceremony.

All documents from outside Spain must be officially translated into Spanish and authenticated by a legal entity.
