Walk. Maguez. March 14th 2010

This was the second of my attempts at walking in Lanzarote – and probably one of the most breathtaking for views.

We all parked up not far from the entrance to Guinate Tropical Park, and climbed a gentle slope up towards some old wells. You’ll see a couple of pictures of the wells in the slideshow below. These wells were used by the women of La Graciosa who used to row over with fish to sell, before climbing up the hill to fetch water. They would carry up to 10 litres of water back down on each shoulder before rowing back to Graciosa. Bit tougher than collecting a couple of bottles from Hiperdino to shove in the car eh? The wells are now cemeted, as they were blocked in by the local authorities some time ago.

Once at the top of the hill, you can view across the valley towards Graciosa, just past a stunning area of farmland (yup – I’ve chosen my new house!). Keeping walking up the path eventually brings you out to the top of the cliffs that you can see from Famara. Don’t get too close to the edge if you are nervous of heights though – as it is quite dizzying!

As we came down the other side we walked past some more farmland, and stopped for a very brief chat to a man and woman who were planting Canarian Potatoes – my God they went at some speed! It was all done by hand. We ended up down by the church in Maguez whilst a few people went up to collect the cars from where we had parked.

The whole walk took around an hour each way… and the area was still in full bloom in March. This is a very easy walk… as there are no steep climbs… but do wear something sensible on your feet and take plenty of water.

Just beautiful! This definitely a walk I would do again – and probably bring the dogs next time too.

Remember that my maps are only ever a really rough guide – so please do consult an official walking guide before attempting them. Happy trekking!
