Top 5 ways to ruin your new life in Lanzarote
Yes… there are surefire ways to make sure you fail too! We see it all the time… and of course this list isn’t exhaustive – but watch out that you don’t fall into any of these traps.
1. Move over when you are not completely sure. This is one we’ve seen a few times now. The husband is really keen, but the wife isn’t (and vice versa of course). Making such a move is a giant leap… and you will need everyone invloved to be 100% behind it. Settling in can have its ups and downs… and one person’s nerves or lack of enthusiasm can make the difference between make or break
2. Think it’s going to be a long holiday. Living in Lanzarote is no holiday. Be prepared to work hard, and for wages lower than you are used to in most cases. You may be a brain surgeon earning £100k´s each year – but there’s not much call for that here… and so you may end up doing odd jobs, a bit of cleaning, bar work etc… just to keep some money coming in.
3. Dash in blindly. You must must must do your research. Coming over with rose tinted specs isn’t going to make your transition any easier. Research as much as you can. We certainly hope that because you are reading this, that you are finding this website a useful resource – in fact… the amount of thank you emails we get for the site PROVES it is. Get reading, and ask questions of as many people as you can.
4. Go out every night. Of course a great way to make friends and meet new people is to get out and about. But make sure you strike a good balance. If not, then you could end up eating into your funds… or end up an alcoholic – so make sure you take it easy
5. Refuse to buy local produce. Ok, so you might be loaded… and can’t possibly do without your British brands – but these things cost money. Can we just remind you that Lanzarote is part of the EU, is not a 3rd World land… and the local food is actually edible – and tastes great too! Give it a try or you’ll be skint in no time.
Of course there are hundreds of reasons why people don’t stay… and we’re belittling any of them. But be smart, and you’ll be fine… and settled into your new home in no time at all.
