Retirement in Lanzarote – Healthcare

If you are thinking of retiring to Lanzarote, the following information may be of use to you.

If you are moving here and need financial help whilst you are seeking work, or if you have taken early retirement… then you need to get Form 106 from the DWP. You are only entitled to this if you have been paying into the UK system for at least 3 years immediately prior to your claim. This provides you with temporary health cover for around two years.

If when that E106 expires, you have reached retirement age – then you will need to get Form E121.

Outside of that, you will be epected to provide your own healthcare cover. This is either by working and paying into the system here in Lanzarote, or by paying for private healthcare.

An E106 does not give you a medical card… so you would take that form to the health centre with you, in the same way you would your E111.

The E121 and E106 forms are permanent… and provide notification of your permanent move to Lanzarote. With this in mind… you will need to get the Spanish equivalent of the E111 form if you are planning to visit the UK – otherwise you are not entitled to healthcare whilst there. We recommend that you use the services of a Gestoria to organise this for you (speak to Ben Simkins – he can organise this for you). this is if visiting the UK temporarily. If you are moving back there permanently… then you need to contact the DSS to be resubmitted to the system there.

If in doubt – speak to your Gestoria

  • Norma Townhill:

Can you tell me if there are any websites that can give advice on retirement in Lanzarote. My husband and are both retired and have been thinking for a long while of buying a property and moving over there. We are at a dead end and hopefully can find someone similar who has done the deed and knows the pitfalls or otherwise. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
    Many thanks

  • Hi Norma – unfortunately there are no websites specifically set up for that purpose… simply because it is a niche on a small island.

However we are happy to put you in touch with people in a similar situation to yourselves… I am away just at the moment – but once back I shall raid the address book and give you some contacts.

    Kind regards

    Elle xx

  • Norma Townhill:

Many thanks Elle, I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Norma Townhill:

    Hello Elle
I contacted you in January asking if you knew of anyone who had moved to Lanzarote in retirement, as we were thinking of this. At that time you were away and said you would contact us again on your return. Sorry to chase this but as we are hoping to visit again soon it would be a great help if you could let me know if you have found anything. Many than ks. Hope you had a good holiday

  • Hi Norma. Yes I know a couple who would be happy to have a chat to you – and will pass on your contact info to them this week. Good luck honey! xx

  • Norma Townhill:

Looking forward to hearing from them. Many thanks. Norma

  • No problem at all. I dropped the husband an email with your email address on it – and he said they would be happy to have a natter to you.

  • Norma Townhill:

    Good afternoon Elle
Jut to say thanks for passing my name on. John B has been very helpful. We did have a question about dogs and he suggested that I contact you as you have 2 dogs. We would have to bring ours over as my husband couldn’t live without them. Are they any problems that we may experience?
    Regards
    Norma

  • You’re very welcome Norma. John and his good lady, Marilyn, are lovely people – I bumped into them yesterday in town actually.

Regarding doggies – we actually got ours here… so didn’t ship them over. However a number of friends have brought their fluffy friends with them. The overhwleming response is that it is far cheaper to organise it yourself direct with the airline, rather than going through a specialist company. It is entirely your choice of course… and sometimes it’s worth paying the extra pounds for peace of mind. However, do definitely book a visit to your local vet as soon as possible so that they can help raise all the necessary paperwork and ensure that the dogs’ innoculations etc are fully up to date for you. Your small dogs will come out where you collect suitcases on the conveyor, but larger dogs have to be collected from another gate at the airport. However, your airline will help you through all of this step by step. Do ask your vet for something to help calm the doggies through the journey – but we haven’t heard any recent horror stories about loved pets – and they seem to come out bright eyed and waggy tailed ready for their new life.

The very best of luck, Norma! xx
