Rescuing Whales in Lanzarote
Spotting whales in Lanzarote always brings a flurry of excitement on the Island. Recently, a sad tale had a happy ending when a whale was rescued off the coast of Lanzarote.
The whale had become entangled in ropes, which had cut into its skin in a number of places, and was obviously in some distress. It was so tired that movement was very difficult for it. It is thought that the whale had been trapped for a number of days – hence being so weak, and extremely hungry. Had it been left traped for much longer… this tale could have had a very different ending.
Fortunately, a team of biologists and divers from the Canaries were able to free the 20 ton beastie – and set it on its way again. The whale was a breed known as “Bryde’s Whale” (alaenoptera brydei).
