Lanzarote Relocation

As you may know, a bone of contention of mine is the poor facilities for recycling in Lanzarote – but finally they seem to be taking it seriously. According to the Gestora Canarias Residuos SA, Lanzarote gathered almost three million kilos of glass in 2008. This was an increase of 18% on 2007, when slightly less than two and a half  million kilos were gathered. In spite of being the most inhabited municipality, Arrecife is only fifth in terms of collection volume.

January, 2008 was the period in which the major number of kilos was gathered (not surprising after Christmas and New Year – we may eb responsible for some of that ourselves… hic!) whereas February was that much less, the rest of the months show similar figures.

For municipalities, out of these 3.000 tons per year that were gathered, Tias came out top, with almost a third of the Island total, almost 1.000 tons. Yaiza followed with 813 and then Teguise with just shy of 710. These municipalities have a volume of collection of glass much larger than the rest, simpply because they contain the 3 major holiday resorts.

Arrecife in spite of having treble the population of San Bartolomé was below in the glass collection. In San Bartolomé 158,000 kilos were gathered last year and in Arrecife 154,000. This demonstrates that a great deal still remains for raising awareness, and improving domestic collection, especially in the capital, where less glass was gathered although it has 111 containers compared to the 64 of San Bartolomé.

Arrecife – 111
Haria – 46
San Bartolomé – 64
Teguise – 152
Tias – 138
Tinajo – 23
Yaiza – 143
