No camping at Papagayo this summer
The Town hall of Yaiza has announced that will not open the doors of the campsite at Papagayo during the summer period, “ due to the high costs that accompany the opening and the maintenance of this installation ”.
“ We are conscious that this will be difficult for the hundreds of persons who come every year to accept, but the economic situation of the Town hall of Yaiza forces us into action ”, affirms the southern mayoress, Gladys Acuña.
“ This group of Government works so that the funds which the Town hall of Yaiza has at present are directed to improve the quality of life of the citizens of the municipality. On the other hand, what we realize well, is that we cannot face alone the costs involved with having a campsite opened for the enjoyment of all the citizens of Lanzarote and of the rest of islands of the archipelago ”.
They remind us that, according to an economic study prepared by municipal technicians, ” the camping of Papagayo is clearly running at a loss. Going back to 2007 – from Holy Week until the end of September, months in which the campsite usually remains open, the Town hall of Yaiza deposited €247k euros in plot rentals, while the expenses amounted to €716k, correspondents, mainly due to the payment of wages for personnel, fuel, the rent of the generating group and water consumption “.
On the other hand, the said economic report details that the suitable tariffs for the camping of Papagayo are those of €14 a night for the small plots and €25 for the big ones, whereas they had actually been charging €4 for the small plot and €7 for the big ones.
“ With this information and the absence of helps it is practically unviable to keep the doors of the campsite open ”, points out the mayoress, “ although we remain open to any external suggestion that comes our way because, clearly, our intention is not that of harming the interests of the campers ”.

A Blot on the Landscape.
The campsite should be returned to nature. I cannot believe that the people of Yaiza built the campsite and all it’s facilities in what was once a wonderful natural landscape, enjoyed by all who visited Papagayo.
