Moving to Playa Blanca – Fergus and Hazel’s Story

Not many residents of Playa Blanca have managed to avoid Fergus and his infectious humour. Both he and Hazel have become good friends of ours, as we moved to the town at around the same time. His dry approach to everything has us roaring with laughter at his bar on a regular basis.

Fergus and Hazel

The former tiler and former dental nurse  moved to Lanzarote in the summer of 2006 from Kerry in Ireland with their 3 daughters (they now have four – congratulations!) simply because they were at the right point in their life to make the leap. The sunshine, quality of life for their girls, and the yearning to start their own business here were reason enough to take the plunge.

Sure enough – within no time at all… Fergus and Hazel purchased a bar opposite the church in Playa Blanca, and within just a few short weeks Paddy Macs Irish Pub was born. The bar is one of the most popular in Playa Blanca with live music and entertainment most nights of the week. They also do great food – and their full Irish breakfast is excellent.

After renting in Playa Blanca for a short time – it was apparent that they were staying… so they started viewing properties. They soon found 26 Chalets on the road into Playa Blanca, and spoke to the guys there about purchasing. The company that built them (UGR) also were able to sort out finance for the mortgage, and the deal was done.

Just a couple of years later, and both Fergus and Hazel have made their mark on the town… and we’re very happy that they are here!

The properties known as Los Chalets were built by UGR. You can contact them via the website.

Edit: Sadly, Paddy Macs Bar is now closed… but we wish Fergus and Hazel all the very best for the future

HIya guys. Exciting times, then eh? Definitely make sure that you bring plenty of money to live on for a while. Lanzarote is suffering just as everywhere else is right now… and jobs are scarce. Spain has thre highest unemployment rate in Europe… and the Canaries are amongst the worst hit. Bars are suffering all over the Island right now too…as a knock on effect of the credit crunch and visitor numbers being down.

But don’t be disheartened… because these tough times won’t last forever. Keep your plans going… and the best of luck to you and your family.

Do rent first… so that you can make sure that you have chosen the right area. Somewhere that is great for a holiday might not be suitable for living in. This is why many choose not to live in the resorts themselves… and perhaps go inland a bit.. or further north.

Keep in touch – and let us know how you get on!
