Lanzarote Driving Tips
Driving in Lanzarote is the source of many debates, worries, and even laughs. The following tips are not formal, and not part of the Spanish Highway Code. They might make life a little easier for you. However, if a policeman asks… don’t blame us!
Driving in an emergency to a hospital? Then trap a white towel, t-shirt or similar in the window on the driver’s side - so that it flaps as you whizz up the road. The police recognise this as a sign that you have a dire emergency… and often will give you an escort to the nearest hospital. This obviously doesn’t work if you are just trying to get to your local bar ready to catch the footie!
Roundabouts? Eek! Do what the locals do… keep an eye on everything around you, and stick to the outside lane. Don’t do what I do - close your eyes until it’s all over. Mind you - it’s not me driving at the time, so I get away with it.
Approaching a pedestrian crossing? Obviously slow down! But if there is someone about to cross, then switch on your left indicator so any vehicles behind you are alerted that something is going on.
Drive on the right! Yes, it sounds obvious doesn’t it? but you’d be surprised how many cars (with drivers from the UK and Ireland) drift over to the other side of the road. this is especially bad on Thursdays.
That’s it for now - but perhaps you have some that you would like to share? Then either leave a comment here, or drop us an email HERE
