Hoopoes in Lanzarote
One of the most regular visitors to our garden is a bird called the Hoopoe. I remember looking at pictures of them in bird books as a child – and thinking “what a great name!”
It has quite a distinctive call – with three syllables – almost a “hoo hoo hoo”. It is part of a bird group that also includes kingfishers and bee-eaters – and is quite prolific in this part of Europe, as well as NW Africa. The Spanish name for Hoopoe is Abubilla.
We’ve seen them all over Lanzarote since arriving… but it has been lovely to see one regularaly visiting our garden, and perching on the fence – whilst also very occasionally bringing the missus with him. Here’s a picture that Alan took recently of one sitting on next door’s roof.
Enjoy!

I’ve not done from Puerto Calero to Playa Quemada yet… but it’s on the list. And of course…. there’s an obligatory stop for a cheeky vino and perhaps lunch at “7 Islas” as a reward!
Hello Elle,
We are as well, last week we walked from the old town to playa quemada and saw all the goat farms on the way. A fantastic walk and not too arduous !
I like that walk, Phil. I’m looking forward to seeing the barrancos gushing with water when the rains come in the spring.
Elle xx
We often see them on the cliff path between the Old Town and Puerto Calero
They certainly are, Sue! I see them all the time here now – and never cease to smile when I see them… ot hear their call.

Hi,
I too as a child I had a book of British Birds with the lovely hoopoe on the last page. In the following 40 years I had never encountered a real one so I was delighted to finally and unexpectedly see one feeding by the coast on a recent trip to Lanzarote, approx 10 feet away from me. I am still smiling – they are beautiful.
Probably the same pair, Kerry. They’re lovely aren’t they? xx
We have had those two in our garden as well Elle .
We were wondering what kind of birds they were.
Thanks xx
