Growth of Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca is by far the fastest growing resort in Lanzarote. Being Lanzarote things don’t happen fast, but in the time we have been here we have seen many changes.Such things as the new marina and the Rubimar shopping centre, bus station, the expansions in the health centre and the school, and many new housing developments along the lines of 26 Chalets, Las Velas, and many others you can look at on sites such as Park Estates and Tara (do have a look at our property in Lanzarote section if that is your main interest). Major commercial concerns like Hiper Dino, Cash Diplo, and FT have come into the town. There are many still empty shops and industrial units, all being slowly occupied, and there is talk of a science park type commercial area near to the garage as you enter Playa Blanca.
The town is a little over stocked at the moment with new housing, and development is slowing due to the recessions in the UK and other global financial centres. But, this commercial growth we have described should help fill the empty properties. After a period of quick growth, Playa Blanca is becoming more organic, the infrastructure and facilities have improved tremendously since we arrived. On balance we believe that the Yaiza Ayuntamiento have got the balance right and are retaining some of the character of Playa Blanca. Okay, so it´s not the little fishing village it once was, but we do not see it becoming the Ayia Napa, it is a family friendly resort, and from our point of view a really good place to live and work.
Rumours and other plans
- Golf Course – There has long been talk of a golf course in Playa Blanca – don’t hold your breath – but we are sure it will come sometime.
- Cruise Destination – Plans are in place to redevelop the port in Playa Blanca, which is great for the town and its tourism business, and great for the people aboard the ships who will now have a five minute walk to great bars and restaurants instead of docking in Arrecife with a great view of the desalination plant and a long taxi ride to get to anywhere worth seeing. Arrecife is not the prettiest of cities!
- Water Park – We have recently heard of plans to develop a water park along the seafront close to the Princess Yaiza.
- Secondary School – Plans have been accepted to enable the building of a secondary school
- Sports Centre – We understand that their are also plans to develop a sports centre in the Costa Papagayo area of Playa Blanca, a much needed facility for residents.
We genuinely believe that Playa Blanca is a resort town with a big future…
