Getting a cervical smear test in Lanzarote

With the death of Jade Goody, the awareness of cervical cancer has been raised again. This begs the question of us ladies here… “Where do I get a smear test in Lanzarote?”.

If you are paying into the Spanish Social Security system in Lanzarote, then you can book this through your GP. However, in some areas of the island there can be a long wait for this. Spanish healthcare, although being of a high standard, has it’s focus on curative rather than preventative medicine.

Should you wish to go private, then you can speak to Dr Elvia who is based in Puerto del Carmen. Dr Elvia speaks English – which can be a relief for ladies already concerned about going through an invasive examination. You can call for an appointment on 928 514 077. The cost is around €50, and results are given by telephone within 10 days.

Alternatively, if you have private health insurance, you can book your appointment at Hospiten. They should be able to give you an appointment within a few days, and your results are collected in person within a couple of weeks.

The word in Spanish for this procedure is “citalogica”.

Please take care of your health, ladies – and don’t leave these things to chance.

  • I’m sorry honey – but none of us could advise on a specific medical case such as this. If your UK hospital has given you something in wiriting… then I would take that to your Doctor here… and let them make that decision. Spanish Healthcare is curative rather than preventative… although they are changing nowadays.

Go see your Doc honey – as soon as you can.

Good luck, and we hope that all turns out right for you.

I think we should all take it a bit more seriously than we do eh, Brynette? It’s almost “out of sight… out of mind”- but it’s a big killer – so we should sort ourselves out really.

Nice to see you on here again Brynette. Hope you and Alan are settling back into normal life after your recent loss.
