Flowers in Lanzarote

On my birthday last week… I received a stunning bouquet of flowers from a friend in the UK. She chose to use the services of a lady called Glynis from Flowers By Serenity – who to our knowledge is the only English florist in Lanzarote – and she chose well! Through this… we have had some great chats with Glynis… and she has kindly agreed to give us some hints and tips on all things flowers in Lanzarote… information that is perfect for anyone looking for an extra hobby. Her details are at the base of this article. Look out for future articles by Glynis!

Having just received a stunning bouquet of flowers or a beautiful arrangement of flowers, you are now wondering how you can keep them from dying within a day or two.   By following these simple rules they you will be able to enjoy the pleasure of them for days to come.

  1. Remove any leaves that will be under water.  Submerged leaves will rot and cause bacteria to form, thus shortening the life of your flowers and making the water smell.
  2. Choose a vase or container in proportion to the amount of flowers you are using.  Too small a vase or container will not hold sufficient water, and will dry out before you realise it.
  3. Always add the cut flower food which came with your flowers – this really does make a difference.
  4. Change the vase water (and flower food) every two to three days.
  5. Cut approx ½” off the stems each time you change the water.  Cut at a sharp angle, exposing more of the central area of the stem known as the xylem tissue, which is responsible for the uptake of water. this will allow the maximum amount to flow up the stem.  Stems once cut start to heal themselves, just like we do when we have cut ourselves. However if the stem heals, the flower head will be deprived of water, and will wilt and die.
  6. If you have been given an arrangement you can use the cut flower food mixture to top up the container which contains the floral foam.
  7. Do not place the flowers in full sun (yes I know a little difficult here in Lanzarote)  but this will cause excess water loss and they will quickly wilt.  A cool room is the ideal place to put your flowers for maximum life (again, not the easiest of tasks)
  8. Lightly spray your flowers from time to time, but never in sunlight, as this will burn the flowers.

A huge thank you to Glynis who has kindly provided this article (and future ones). You can order your wedding bouquets, flower arrangements, and gifts for friends via Glynis’ website at www.flowersbyserenity.net

Glynis – my flowers are beautiful – thank you for coming to the rescue of my friend Kate who wanted by birthday to be extra special. Your flowers made it all the more so… and I continue to enjoy them every day!

Enjoy your flowers that someone has so thoughtfully sent to you.
