Things to do in Lanzarote

Events in Playa Blanca – December 2011

Sorry this is a little late as one day has passed for these events laid on by the local government… but hopefully you can catch one or two things anyway. With the exception of the walk on the Saturday..all events are held at the “Salon de Viviendas Yaiza” – behind the MVP Pools and Spas Showroom in Playa Blanca

Wednesday 14th 5pm. Open table for advice from experts on new laws for foreigners (sorry – this is now over).

Thursday 15th 4pm. Kitchens of the World. Food and recipes from the world’s kitchens.

Friday 16th 6pm. Pilar Sordo hosts “Vive la Diferencia”. Psychology.

Saturday 17th 10am. Meet in the plaza at Femés, and join the walk from there, down to Playa del Pozo, and then to Playa Quemada. Transport is available to return everyone to Femés again afterwards. The walk should take about 3 hours. It’s not suitable for kiddies really… and is quite a challenging hike (we’ve done it ourselves a couple of times now).

For more information – phone (in Spanish) the “Área de immigración de los servicios sociales del Ayuntamiento de Yaiza” on 928 836 834

Enjoy!

Other People’s Experiences – Ian & Maureen Rosenberg

A few short weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Ian and Maureen Rosenberg… who own and run Tootsies Fish Foot Spa in Playa Blanca.

Ian & Maureen Willis. Tootsies Fish Foot Spa Playa Blanca LanzaroetNormally I would talk about how people are newcomers to the Island, and how they settled in etc… but this story is a little different.Happy reading!

Ian originally came to Lanzarote in 1987 after a chance conversation at one of his photo developing shops back in the UK.  A customer had popped in, and recommended the island as a good place for Ian to go and unwind. Well… unwind he did… as he didn’t leave until 1997! Nestled comfortably in Punta Mujeres, Ian enjoyed his decade here.  However, in 1997 he fancied a change, and so headed to Malaga on the mainland, where he supplied gaming and fruit machines via his company, “Unimac”.

Maureen is a qualified nursing practitioner, and moved to Malaga in 2000, as Maureen Willis). In 2003, she met Ian and the romance of the century (I can hear you laughing now Ian and Maureen as you read this) began. They were married in Las Vegas in 2009.

Throughout their relationship however, Ian often reminisced about his beloved Lanzarote and made it clear to Maureen that he would love to return. And so they started coming over for holidays… exploring every inch of the Island as Ian proudly showed the Island to Maureen. Eventually, in November 2010, as Maureen and Ian were shivering in the Spanish winter… she said “Why are we still here?” And so the plans for moving back to Lanzarote began.

In May 2011, Ian and Maureen landed, and got settled into their new home. Ian is fluent in Spanish, and so got stuck straight in meeting up with people he had kept in touch with over the years, looking for suitable locations for the business. It wasn’t long before he found the perfect spot.

They opened “Tootsies Fish Foot Spa” in CC Papagayo in Playa Blanca in the summer of 2011, and were packed to the rafters from the first day! People come back again and again once they have tried the treatments. I myself had my reservations… but Ian put my mind completely at rest. I of course had seen these types of shops springing up around… but was concerned about hygiene as I’d only seen spray soap in some of them – buit Tootsies uses proper sanitiser. I also had concerns about the health of the fish (had tropical fish growing up… and know that a fine balance is needed to keep them healthy and happy) but was very relieved to hear that the water gets filtered eight times per hour! Certainly, upon my close inspection… the fish look extremely healthy.

If you’ve never had this done, do give it a try. The sensation is bizarre but certainly not unpleasant, and the little critters certainly made a difference to my talons.

There are discounts available for group bookings, as well as for residents or people who have property here.

You can contact Ian and Maureen via their website at www.tootsiesfishfootspa.com

Hearty congratulations are also in order for Maureen, who this week has become a very proud grandmother. Our best warmest wishes to the new baby and her family.

(My most sincere apologies to Ian as I unwittingly gave him the surname of Maureen’s ex husband originally! Sorry Ian! All fixed now and I will make it up to you over dinner and drinkies at Casa A&E very soon!)

New Water Park in Lanzarote

Yippee! A new water park has just opened at Rancho Texas on the outskirts of Puerto del Carmen. The water slides haven’t been delivered and fitted yet… but we have been told that they should follow and be useable by the end of the year.

The admission prices are for both the water park AND the zoo – so you can have a full day out with the family. It’s great value at €17 for adults, and €12 for under 12s. You can also get season tickets, saving you more money… €40 for adults, and €30 for under 12s. This entitles you to as many visits as you like in a 12 month period.

We’re going to wait until the slides arrive… but we think it’s terrific value.

Enjoy!

Zumba in Playa Blanca Lanzarote

Yesterday whilst out with the walking group, I had the pleasure of meeting a very nice lady called Ann. And it was whilst speaking to her that she mentioned something that I think  you will all enjoy!

Ann has just started running Zumba classes at the Hesperia hotel in Playa Blanca. Zumba is the Latinesque dance craze that gets you fit while you’re having fun. The classes are as follows:

  • Mondays & Wednesdays at 7pm
  • Fridays at 10am

The cost is a mere €4 per class (lasts about an hour) and it is for all ages and abilities. Ann describes it as “exercise in disguise”.

So if you want to get fit, meet new people, or simply just have a giggle… then pop along to one of Ann’s classes. You can phone her for more information or to reserve a place on 630 758 654. Make sure you take plenty of water, and a towel.

Enjoy!

Not off to the best of starts…

Having secured the help of Mitch – Lanzarote’s best known personal trainer, I have to admit to not getting off to the best of starts! Partially my fault, partially plain old bad luck.

I'm not wimping out Mitch - honest!

I first met Mitch about a month ago when he set me a couple of relatively simple tasks, and asked me to keep a food diary. I met him again on Wednesday to be greeted by a laugh as he handed me the food diary I’d sent him the previous day. The sheet he explained was marked with a little note – with words to the effect of “Normally I highlight the bad things of a clients diet, to save time I’ve marked yours with the good stuff”! I have been a good boy with the walking though and Elle and I came to the conclusion that I am at least doing more mileage on foot than I have been by car since first meeting Mitch.

The upside of the food diary comment being that it shouldn’t be hard to impress Mitch with at least some improvement on that score for our next meeting. Despite the difficulties of my current lifestyle and movements I can at least throw in a couple of salads for next time.

Since we first met, Mitch had drawn me up a personalized training program to complete at least three times a week. Life is a little complicated at the moment as I had explained to Mitch, and the design of the program totally took this on-board. Looks a bit daunting and a lot of hard work – but necessary given my future plans.

I have to admit to not getting off to the greatest of starts. I’m seriously willing but have managed to hurt my hand since we met on Wednesday so can’t actually do the program, I’m guessing a week or two before I can start – but I’m doing my best to clock up the miles on foot, will do anything that doesn’t involve my hand, and improve my diet. Visiting friends at the moment so its not always easy to control your diet – I did however have salad with my burger from the BBQ when I arrived! It’s a start…..

Mitch has promised me a beasting next time I see him – looking forward to that – I think!

Charity Event 20th May 2011

We received this email last night from our pal, Lana. Happy reading!

Hope this message finds you all well. I wondered if you guys will help to support the Friday Night Fever Charity event that Rosemary Nightingale of the Gazette is doing for Alicia and Emma, late Gaye Perryman’s kids. We are helping to promote and organize the event.

I don’t know if you knew Gaye personally, but she sadly lost her battle with leukaemia last year, leaving her two lovely daughters Alicia (16) and Emma (13). Their father, and Gaye’s beloved husband José, died in 2009, making it a doubly cruel blow.

Many people have pulled together to help the family following Gaye’s passing, showing a wonderful sense of support for her two beautiful, bright girls. Rosemary at the Gazette has set up a trust fund to cater for the girls’ educational expenses – such as books, school trips, etc – that will be administered by Goreti Martinón at her Asesoria offices in Arrecife whose work with the Niños Del Tercer Mundo charity stands for itself.

This is why on Friday the 20th May we are throwing a party to let your hair down, dance to music YOU love, and have some fun.

The venue is Bahia in los Pocillos, Puerto del Carmen.

The party starts at 8pm until as late as we want to it to be, with a welcome drink, Soul Station will kick off with the best Motown the island has to offer, and then Scot will get the party hopping. We are providing a delicious buffet will be served to keep the energy levels high and there will be a raffle with amazing prizes to be won from generous sponsors. If you want to dress the era there will be a special prize!!

The tickets cost 35€ and all profit goes into the Trust fund, and the amount raised will be announced in the next Gazette with photos.

Please try to come and ask as many people you know to join us to make this night special, and if you and your friends want to get a table together for the evening just email or call me on 636984316 or let me know if you can help in anyway.

Many thanks and lots of love to you both,

Lana & Scott

… and the winner is…

A big thank you to everyone who took part in our recent draw to win two tickets to the Comedy Show to be hosted on 22nd March.

The lucky winner of a pair of tickets is… Sue Jones. She and a guest will certainly have a barrel of laughs on Tuesday evening. Enjoy it Sue!

Win Tickets – Live Comedy Event – 22nd March 2011

Back in December, Mojitos in Playa Blanca played host to a night of live comedy. Well, it’s back again… and this time is being held at La Bahia in Puerto del Carmen.

The Mojito’s Production next show titled –“Laugh till you cry or your money back! (Only joking)” is scheduled for 22nd of March.

comedy club lanzaroteIf the  Van Selman/Silver first offering is anything to go by then the March show will be the hottest date for the social calendar.  The line up is to die for.  On the bill are Costaki Economopoulos from New York, Patrick Monahan from Ireland and Colin Cole from Australia.  New Zealander Andre King, who was a huge hit with Lanzarote audience in December, will return to MC the March show.

This latest line up has very impressive credentials.  Costaki, the writer and producer of the hugely popular Bob & Tom radio show, has been heralded by the New York Times Magazine as: – “ A casually brilliant joke philosopher”.  Patrick Monahan, has been taking comedy audiences by storm in Europe and Australia for the last six months and according to the Sunday Times: – “Has all the charm of Ed Byrne, the energy of Adam Bloom and wild leaps of imagination that are resonant of Ross Noble”.  The Mail on Sunday says about Colin Cole: – “He had the audience in the palm of his hand. Whether it be a gag on a well worn subject, or something he spotted on the way into town, every punch line was a gem to behold; every joke expertly crafted. This man you’ve got to see!”

Given the state of the world today and the rumours of the impending doom we all could do with a good laugh. It does help.  Perhaps, if more people went to comedy shows more frequently, there wouldn’t be so many people taking prescription anti-depressants or using a semi – automatic to resolve their anger and frustration at the world. Seeing comedy show on television is great but nothing can compare to the belly aching, side splitting, tear running laughter shared with couple of hundred other people.  To experience a great stand up show is a real buzz and no TV, no matter how big can beat that.  Laugh more, live longer.

“Laugh till you cry or your money back! (Only joking)”, 22nd of March at La Bahia, Sala de Fiestas in Puerto del Carmen.  Tickets are €25.  If you would like to have a delicious BBQ and buffet provided by the La Cabana Restaurant the price is €40.

For all information and ticket sales please telephone 636984316 or 671313402 or 689085539, or e mail lana@vanselman.com

But of course we love to give you goodies… and so Lanzarote Relocation is pleased to be able to exclusively offer you a chance to win a pair of tickets, worth €25 each, to the show.

Simply fill out the following form.

Good luck… and remember, if you have already purchased tickets, and are the lucky winner… then your money will be refunded. You can also transfer your tickets to friends in Lanzarote if you’re not going to be on the Island on the 22nd March.

The winner will be drawn at random on Friday 18th March 2011

Your details will only be passed to Mojitos Productions. This is for the purposes of winner notification, and for keeping you informed of future events. You can opt out of future mailings of course. We will not keep your details here at Lanzarote Relocation, and of course would never dream of using them for our own business purposes… that’s just not how we roll!

Keep smiling!
