Buying pet products online
Living in Lanzarote we’ve found that there isn’t that much choice when it comes to buying the dogs. And pet products are damned expensive!
We’re planning a trip away soon and want to take the dogs with us. So I’ve been looking around for a proper dog guard – I really don’t want to risk the fines! At times like this, so many of us ex-pats gravitate to ebay and Amazon back in the UK. But, as I’m always spouting on about using local businesses I thought I’d have a look at what online pet stores there might be on the peninsula. My thinking being that it would be cheaper on postage as well as being more convenient that buying from the UK. I am glad I did – I found TiendAnimal.es. Good prices, great selection and they deliver to the Lanzarote as well as the other Canary Islands – they also refund the appropriate taxes automatically, something few UK site seem capable of. Remember that you will need to register with Iceland to use their free home delivery service – and you can start that process by filling out the form below. Transferring Your Pension out of the UK
Most of our regular readers will know that we personally use Kelly Eason from Currencies Direct when transferring funds from the UK to Lanzarote. We have been using him for a number of years now, and trust him… which is why we happily recommend him to all of you.
During a conversation with Kelly recently, he suggested that we had a chat to a man called David Kennedy. David runs his own financial services company in Spain, has been in the industry since 1986, and has been heavily involved with QROPS since it started in the spring of 2006 when the HMRC allowed the transfer of UK pensions out of the country. His company is regulated by the DGS (Departmentos General de Seguros, similar to FSA) here in Spain, and for Investments regulated by FSC (Financial Services Commission) Gibraltar and by September 2011 will also be regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority) UK.
QROPS stands for Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme, and is basically a way that you can access your UK pension early. Once freed up, you can then invest it for your family’s future, release it as a lump sum, invest it in various ventures… … … the possibilities are endless. So – if you had £100,000 tied up in your UK pension… then you could have that transferred tax free to your expat bank account! The whole process takes around 12 weeks.
Please note that this is not your government “old age” pension… this is your private pension – so if you had one through your company, or one with a company such as AXA, Prudential or Pearl… then these are the pensions that you can unlock. You must be between 18 and 75, living outside of the UK (or have immediate plans to), and not currently drawing on your pension.
So, if you have a UK personal or occupational pension tied up in the UK, and want to be able to free up that money, tax free… then why not have a natter to David. It is without obligation… and we know from chatting to him ourselves, that he is a straight talking, no nonsense kind of chap. You can contact him simply by filling out the form below, or by clicking HERE (David has not paid us to advertise on this site)
David is also planning a free seminar in Lanzarote later on in the year… and we will let you know more details about that as they become available.
Iceland Comes to Lanzarote
NEW CATALOGUE REPLACES THE ONE ON THIS PAGE. CLICK HERE
Shopping in Lanzarote is constantly evolving. Since our arrival in 2006, it has certainly changed dramatically. And now, there is a familiar face from the old country, but new to Lanzarote.
Iceland has now opened… and they are offering free delivery around Lanzarote on orders over €15.
First thing to do is have a nosey at their new catalogue, by clicking on the image to the right.
Then fill out the form just below with your name and email address and they will send you a client registration form. Then you can just email through your order and they will confirm with a delivery time. You can pay by cash or credit card upon delivery.
The prices look good, and although they obviously wouldn’t have the range that UK stores would have… there is still a very good selection.
Right – now we just have to eat everything currently filling up the freezer… so we can get our first order in. Sticky Toffee Cheesecake anyone?
Happy shopping

Pool Safety in Lanzarote
A week or so ago, we had some friends over from Fuerteventura to visit – who are soon going to be new Lanzarote residents. It was a pleasure to see them… but it was also a reminder that our home was not very child friendly. Now that’s ok, because we don’t have young children of our own. Maybe we’ll change our home once the grandkids start appearing (not too quickly please boys – I’m too young to be a Granny just yet!) but for now our home is built for us. Continue reading

A change to the site
There have been some changes recently, in how we (Alan and I) have personally been transferring money from the UK to here. Many of you will have seen that we have banners for HiFX and Axia on our website. They will remain, as they have provided us with a good service, so have no reservations in recommending them. Special Offer at Flutterby Wellness Centre
Hi everyone. You may remember me extolling the virtues of Lisa Carlin and the fantastic massage I received at her Flutterby Wellness Centre in Lanzarote some time ago. Here is a link to that article: Chill Out!
Well, you lucky people – she has a special offer on at the moment. She offers a full body massage for only €20. It invigorates whilst it relaxes… strips you of dead skin cells, improves blood flow, relieves stiffness and tenseness.
I don’t normally post offers for companies in here – because that is not what this site is about (plenty of others ramming it down your throat elsewhere if that’s your thing)… but with the new year here… and most of us wanting to relax and feel better about ourselves – I thought we could all do with a treat.
I know that both Alan and I are working like crazy… with so many projects on the go – but just one hour a month is enough to chill us out… and leave us more prepared for dealing with life’s day to day excitement. I am sure that you guys are the same!
You can contact Lisa via her website HERE.
Another Hiperdino Opens in Playa Blanca – Nov 2009
Supermarkets in Playa Blanca are often the subject for conversation in various Lanzarote forums and on travel sites on the web.

Supermarkets in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote
Hiperdino is well regarded as the best place in the town to do your main shopping. The original store (opened 2006) is located on the dual carriageway from the harbour to the town centre (directions at the end of this article). Continue reading
