Lanzarote Relocation February 2010
Hello everyone.
This morning we received emails and phone calls from a number of concerned and confused people when they received emails titled “Lanzarote Relocation February 2010″. These emails did not originate from this website, they came from Mike and Julie Cliffe-Jones, the authors of www.lanzaroteinformation.com who are also the owners of the Lanzarote Estate Agent, Estupendo.
A number of you were concerned because you thought we had gone into business with Estupendo, which goes against what our blog says on its home page – “We receive NO financial payments from Estate Agents, or other companies on this island for mentioning them or their services, for any articles supplied, or for any introductions made.” Some of the articles donated are from our clients from our other businesses… and some are not. No money exchanges hands in order to appear within this site.
“Lanzarote Information” is a general interest Lanzarote website of a commercial nature, and not the more niche “Lanzarote Relocation” information blog website that you are reading now.
The following is an excerpt from our own newsletter that went out at lunchtime today, which oddly enough was before we started receiving concerned messages from our readers.
Remember that Lanzarote Relocation continues to be free to use, and free of advertisers… ensuring that the information is unbiased and given only in good faith. We do not run the site as a business (it is, and always has been, a hobby for us)… and it is funded merely by a sprinkling of affiliate advertiser banners that you can see in the side bars on the website. We’re not trying to sell you anything… no holidays… no property… no timeshare… no wills… no tax shelters – we are who we are. Despite other companies claiming connection on their sites, in their newsletters, and even at sales meetings (yes, we were appalled too) – Lanzarote Relocation is Elle & Alan – nobody else. If you are unsure in any way about any claims you may be reading elsewhere – then do not hesitate to contact us, so that we can reassure you.
We would like to reassure all of our readers that our website ethos has not changed – and that all areas and content of this website will continue to be provided free of charge to all users, and without financial backing from businesses on the Island. We are also sure that Mike and Julie would not have intended to have been quite so misleading in their choice of newsletter title.

Happy New Year – 2010
We would like to wish all of our loyal readers a very happy new year.
We hope that 2010 brings you everything you wish for and more.

Merry Christmas
We would like to wish all of our loyal readers a very Merry Christmas!
Feliz Navidad

Promoting Lanzarote Online and Offline
As most of you will know, Lanzarote is massively dependant upon the tourist industry as its main source of income. Even if you do not provide services directly for holidaymakers, then generally you are supplying someone who does. Read the rest of this entry »
Lanzerote – Lanzzarote – Lanzarotte – Lanzarot – Lanarote
Lanzerote – Lanzzarote – Lanzarotte – Lanzarot – Lanarote -
Yes, Lanzarote gets spelt so many different ways – despite there only being one true spelling. This happens with so many words that are of a different laguage to your mother tongue… or simply by a slip of that finger.
So… if you have landed on this page, then the chances are that you have found us via Google on a misspelling of Lanzarote. Not to worry – we’ve all slipped a key on the keyboard from time to time. Hey my typos are amongst the world’s worst! At least now you are in the right place to find Lanzarote information and advice.
Here are a few links that can point you in the right direction for what you may be looking for:

We bimbled up to Arrecife today to have a look around the shops. So I took a few snapshots with the mobile. I’m no David Bailey… but it’s always good to have a play. Read the rest of this entry »
Credit crunch in Lanzarote
Recent events around the world have all worked together to affect the travel industry. For an Island such as Lanzarote, which is heavily reliant on tourism… this is now very apparent. No – the Island is not dead, despite what “doom and gloomers” would have you believe, but it certainly is going through a testing time. Businesses are battening down the hatches, and taking measures to ensure that they survive the difficult times. So for new people wanting to move to Lanzarote – is it s good idea? Or a bad one?
For those people trying to sell their property back in Ireland or the UK, this isn’t the easiest time. With banks being a lot stricter about lending… less people are buying. So although a family’s personal circumstances may be perfect for making the move… that house sale could be holding them back.
Ok… but what if the property is already sold, and the money’s in the bank waiting? Well… if that money is in pounds, then right now is a horrendous time to get it changed into euros.
But worry not. For house buyers in Lanzarote who have the cash ready, there are many many bargains to be snapped up. Many people are keen to sell for their own reasons, and haggling is achieving new dreams for many potential buyers that would have struggled a year or so ago.
Moving on to employment. Ok – so if you think you’re going to move over with your family of four… and just “get by” with a bit of bar work, and cleaning – then think again. This is a tourist destination remember? So if there are less tourists coming, then there are less jobs in the tourist industry. Most companies on the Island will not consider employing someone until they are actually living on the Island… and many more won’t employ until the person can provide references and experience of Island life too. It’s not personal, it’s just what employers have learned through valuable experience.
However, all is not lost. There are still new people relocating to Lanzarote all the time – who have the know how, gumption, and desire to make a proper living. You’re not likely to make your millions here… but a comfortable living is very achieveable. Starting your own business can be a good way of achieving this. But make sure you do your research and if buying a business, make sure you are given all the support, paperwork, and legal advice to allow you to make an informed decision. Don’t snap up the first “bargain” you see. If the business is selling… then why? Ask as many questions as you can… and make sure you remove those rose tinted glasses. Do your research if you are starting up a business of your own. Make sure there is a market for you. And ask lots of people for their advice and help – don’t just rely on one or two… as opinions can often be skewed.
If you do your research, plan carefully, bring enough money to live on for a few months in case you can’t find work immediately… and come over with your eyes wide open – then the rewards are immense. We should know!
So think carefully about your impending move… and we’ll see you when you get here!
Lanzarote virtual tour…
We thought readers of this site might be interested in the virtual tour of Lanzarote created by a friend of ours – Paul, at 360Turismo in Playa Blanca.
Whether you are a tourist, aspiring to move to the island, or a resident. We think you’ll find this entertaining. It’s extremely well done!

Goodbye England!
We loved England, and still do, but it’s like the breakdown of a marriage. “I still love you, but I’m not in love with you any more”… There’s nothing we would rather be than English, but we chose to leave… We chose moving to Lanzarote as much through having friends here as anything else. It could have been anywhere, the place, believe it or not was not that important, we just wanted to emigrate. Read the rest of this entry »
