Anglican Church in Lanzarote
A Message from Father Idris:
Making a Difference
This was the theme for the Gibraltar Archdeaconry Synod held recently in Portugal. Clergy and Lay representatives met together for 4 days exploring this theme and sharing ideas and concerns. It is always a fruitful time and one of the few occasions when chaplaincies throughout the Archdeaconry realise they are not “alone”. One of the problems of such a scattered diocese is that Chaplaincies can feel isolated and out on a limb. The clergy too can feel unsupported. Thankfully the clergy of the Canary Islands meet together three times a year and are always on the end of a phone or email!
When Christian people meet together in prayer and fellowship, they can “Make a Difference”. Christian Unity has been in our prayers and thoughts, especially during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Christians have worshipped together despite some theological differences, and this demands from us all respect and acceptance mingled with Christian charity and love.
Ecumenical services are a good way of sending a clear message to the world that we are united in the service of Our Lord. Sadly so often we allow denominational differences to divide us and this is not a good witness to those who may be looking from the outside and wondering, “Shall I join them?”
This is why I have always believed in “All Inclusive” churches where no one is turned away, but embraced as a child of God, just as Jesus embraced the outcast and the marginalised. This did not always go down well with the “religious” people of his day, yet he did not cease responding in love to those who called out to him, saint and sinner alike.
Sometimes we are tempted to think that we cannot make a difference as an individual and so give up trying. Through our daily offering of ourselves through prayer, reading of the scriptures, meditation and sacrificial service we can make a difference. Imagine you are a small pebble. Thrown into a pond, the ripples are far reaching. This is true of our meagre offerings. God can send out ripples of love and healing to others.
Lent is always a yearly opportunity to “give up” something. Instead of alcohol, chocolate or puddings, why not give up “apathy” and have a determination to “do something” for God? The 14th March is Mothering Sunday, and the 28th is Palm Sunday which leads into the wonderful festival of Easter. Please come along. We would love to see you.
You can “Make a Difference” God Bless you. Fr Idris

A message from Father John Jenkins (Anglican Church):
As you may have heard, Father Idris, your chaplain, has had to fly to the UK a week earlier than expected because his brother has been taken critically ill. So this message falls to me. First of all, let me wish you all a very happy and blessed New Year and Decade. The New Year calls for resolutions, so let our resolution be to do what the prophet Micah said that the Lord requires of us: “to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God”
The leadership of our parish has recently been considering how to resource our future ministry in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. As a result you will see inside a plea for volunteers for two positions within our parish structure. And there will other vacancies in March when we elect new members to the PCC and our churchwardens, in addition to the on-going need to find welcomers and sacristans for our Sunday services. We need to involve more lay people in the running of our parish.
Later this month the season of Lent will be upon us. Traditionally Lent is a time of self-examination and self-denial when we attempt to break the hold upon us of those fears and addictions which impede our consciousness of freedom and truth. But it is also a season of renewal and reformation. Self discipline is essentially a loving activity, but it is of little value if it is not harnessed to unrealised potential, and if it does not allow us to give ourselves more creatively and unselfishly to the needs of others. So I urge you to think carefully about how you can help our parish to thrive and grow, rather than struggling to keep going with our present range of services and activities.
The insight of Micah above is good advice as we face the unknown territory of a new decade. The past has gone; the future is in God’s hands. So we must put our whole trust in His goodness and mercy. Trust in God in this precarious life is the only way to foster hope and courage. Dag Hammarskjold, a former Secretary General of the United Nations, said this about the unknown future. “Each day a first day; each day a life. Each morning we must hold out the chalice of our being, to receive, to carry, to give back. It must be held out empty, for the past must only be reflected in its polish, its shape and its capacity”.

Church Newsletter – January 2010
A Message from our Chaplain, the Revd Idris Vaughan:
BE STILL
On the 16th November the Mothers’ Union held their usual Quiet Day at Nazaret. The setting was ideal, with a beautiful chapel and areas to sit and be quiet or read. But it is not just about being quiet with the absence of talk and noise; it is about “stillness” and being open to the voice of God speaking to us.
Not everyone finds silence easy, especially if you live alone. However, I think there is a difference between “silence” and “stillness”. You can be quiet, and yet have a raging torrent of noise going on in your heart or your head; anxieties, worries, regrets, failures. Often these can come bubbling up to the surface when you are quiet, and so people try to prevent them by constant noise, be it the television or radio.
Offering our concerns to God
These things that concern us are of great concern to God and so we need to bring them to him for his healing and grace. Instead of trying to block them out of your mind, why not make a conscious effort to bring them to God openly and honestly, for he can do something with them.
To do this, decide to have a definite time of “stillness”. Find a comfortable posture and place to relax your body and your breathing. Whatever things come bubbling up to the surface do not suppress them but offer them up to God with a short prayer like “Lord heal this” or “Lord take this away” or “Thank you Lord” for good things.
I always take a week’s Retreat at the beginning of a New Year during which, in my times of silence and stillness, I am open to God and the leading of his Holy Spirit for my life in the coming year. Not everyone can have the luxury of a week in Retreat, but spending a few minutes in a week offering to God this special time of stillness can be so rewarding.
There is an organisation called the Retreats Association who have a very helpful web site for anyone interested in Retreats etc. www.retreats.org.uk
And I leave you with their PRAYER FOR STILLNESS.
God of stillness and
creative action,
help us to find a space
for quietness today
that we may live
creatively,
discover the inner
meaning of silence,
and learn the wisdom
that heals the world.
Send peace and joy
to each quiet place;
to all who are
waiting and listening.
May your still small
voice be heard
through Christ,
in the love of the Spirit.
Amen
I pray that you will have a Peaceful and Healthy New Year. Fr Idris

Individualism vs Community
When I was growing up as a boy in a village on the outskirts of Manchester, there was a great sense of community. The church, the school, the sports field and the many pubs featured highly in our social life! There were many community activities which brought people together and you had a sense of “belonging”. If you were missing for a few hours no-one worried because you were usually eating or playing with friends. Read the rest of this entry »
