Lanzarote Retreat
Many of you will know that Alan is in training for his upcoming charity walk of the seven main Canary Islands – and that this training is being overseen by the lovely Mitch.
Mitch has been chatting to Alan recently about a subject close to his heart, and dropped us the following email this morning:
“A friend of mine is setting up a charity to offer British Armed Forces Personnel and their families, who have lost a limb or become disabled whilst serving our country post 9/11, FREE holidays in a specialist rest and recuperation retreat that he is designing and building in Lanzarote.
He needs help getting as much support as possible, so could you please go to his website: www.lanza-retreat.org and if you think the project is a good idea, sign his petition in support of the project.
Please send a similar email to your family, friends and contacts to help build support for this very worthwhile project.
I will be working with him to help in the recuperation of Armed Forces Personnel.
The website is really worth a read and these guys need our help !”
Please do help spread the word. You can also follow them on Twitter HERE
Off again….
Those of you who read this site regularly may be aware of the walk I did from Orzola to Playa Blanca in February. I was thrilled to have managed to raise a total of £1305.67 (including gift aid) via the Just Giving website, which has since been distributed to Niños del Tercer Mundo and the Rose Road Centre and is being put to good use in support of their great works!
The first question I got asked after finishing that, was what next? At the time I hadn’t even thought about it, I wasn’t even sure there would be a next time as it was just something I had wanted to do, and if I could raise a few quid for charity, even better. Also around that time I got an email from our friend Geoff Holt who, to paraphrase, said to me “I bet you’ve got the bug now haven’t you”? With the benefit of hindsight it seems he was right. Raising the money for these extremely worthy causes was probably one of the most satisfying things I have ever done.
I have a new plan. I’m not saying what I’m doing just yet – but suffice it is to say I have to top what I did last time… Watch this space later this month!
This is going to be a lot more more physically demanding. I felt that this time I need some more hands on guidance so have Mitch to help me prepare: Mitch is probably the best known personal trainer on Lanzarote and is setting me off on the right track.
Last time I prepared by getting into the gym and doing a bit of cycling, some weights and of course some walking, I know that for this one that’s not enough – I need some proper targets, I’ll need pushing, and some expert advice and encouragement. There’s no doubt in my mind that Mitch is the man for the job. He’s also a genuinely nice guy!
Alan.

Charity Event 20th May 2011
We received this email last night from our pal, Lana. Happy reading!
Hope this message finds you all well. I wondered if you guys will help to support the Friday Night Fever Charity event that Rosemary Nightingale of the Gazette is doing for Alicia and Emma, late Gaye Perryman’s kids. We are helping to promote and organize the event.
I don’t know if you knew Gaye personally, but she sadly lost her battle with leukaemia last year, leaving her two lovely daughters Alicia (16) and Emma (13). Their father, and Gaye’s beloved husband José, died in 2009, making it a doubly cruel blow.
Many people have pulled together to help the family following Gaye’s passing, showing a wonderful sense of support for her two beautiful, bright girls. Rosemary at the Gazette has set up a trust fund to cater for the girls’ educational expenses – such as books, school trips, etc – that will be administered by Goreti Martinón at her Asesoria offices in Arrecife whose work with the Niños Del Tercer Mundo charity stands for itself.
This is why on Friday the 20th May we are throwing a party to let your hair down, dance to music YOU love, and have some fun.
The venue is Bahia in los Pocillos, Puerto del Carmen.
The party starts at 8pm until as late as we want to it to be, with a welcome drink, Soul Station will kick off with the best Motown the island has to offer, and then Scot will get the party hopping. We are providing a delicious buffet will be served to keep the energy levels high and there will be a raffle with amazing prizes to be won from generous sponsors. If you want to dress the era there will be a special prize!!
The tickets cost 35€ and all profit goes into the Trust fund, and the amount raised will be announced in the next Gazette with photos.
Please try to come and ask as many people you know to join us to make this night special, and if you and your friends want to get a table together for the evening just email or call me on 636984316 or let me know if you can help in anyway.
Many thanks and lots of love to you both,
Lana & Scott
Another project from Alan…

So, I have a new plan. I’m not saying what exactly I’m doing (probably about the same time next year) for a number of reasons – but with traditional Gandy spirit I have to top what I did last time…
As of last Monday I’m back in training! Suffice it is to say that this is going to be a bit more physically demanding.
