Brownies and Rainbows in Lanzarote
Brownies in Lanzarote – yes, they’re here!
Many years ago, I remember waddling along with my Mum on a chilly November evening… very nervous about meeting a Brown Owl. Of course I was soon to learn that it wasn’t a REAL Brown Owl liable to peck at my fingers and eyes, but simply the title of a lovely lady who gathered us all together for learning and fun on a Tuesday evening.
I soon had my little brown uniform and hat (sorry but no – I won’t be sharing pictures), and set to work towards earning my first badge. I was in the “Sprite” group, and knew I didn’t have a hope at the agility class… so went in for something a little less active. Before long, my outfit was sporting lots of badges, and I had learned lots of useful skills along the way. I also learned that it wasn’t ladylike to have “Minnie The Minx” transfers on the back of my hand, but that’s a whole other story!
So it was with a real sense of nostalgia when Sally Finney (a former Brownie leader in the UK) contacted us to talk about the Brownie club being set up in Playa Blanca.
In conjunction with Pamela Hewson, formerly a Girl Guide leader in Australia, Sally has launched a Brownie group in the town centre. there are all sorts of activities planned, to teach the young ladies useful skills, to encourage teamwork, and to make new friends.
Brownies are between 7 and 11 years old, and are groomed to become Girl Guides. But don’t worry if your little treasure is too young at the moment, because already Sally and Pamela are building a list for the younger lasses for “Rainbows”.
Spain has had its own Girl Guiding movement for some years, and there are already souting groups across the other Canary islands. However, the Playa Blanca group has already been accepted as part of the British Guiding Association, so the main language in meetings will be English.
Anyone and everyone (as long as they are a girl in the right age group) is welcome to the meetings.
Sally and Pamela hope that in time Rainbows and Guides will also be as thriving – but they are concentrating on the Brownies for you.
