A cute kitten gets rehomed in Playa Blanca

Last week I received a telephone call from a lovely lady called Patsy. She was over in Playa Blanca on her holidays and needed some help. She and her family had ventured out one evening and had spotted a very distraught kitten on a nearby building site as they were leaving. Of course they realised that the mother may not be far away – so they left cute kitty where he was. Read the rest of this entry »

Fire Guts Chinese Restaurant in Playa Blanca

Punta Limones Commercial Centre in Playa Blanca was a hive of activity today and teeming with firemen and onlookers, as the “Restaurante Chino” was completely gutted by fire. This was the Chinese restaurant on the ground floor, to the right of The Irish Anvil.

Thankfully nobody was hurt – and the fire crew cordoned off the area to ensure that it didn’t spread. Today’s hot winds could have easily spread the fire much further – but fortunately the wind direction ensured this didn’t happen.

Alan grabbed a couple of photos on his mobile to show the damage after the event.

Mood Talent Castings

Unless you’ve been living under a rock all these years, then no doubt you will have heard of such shows as “Britain’s Got Talent”. The first talent show on the Island where in just 60 seconds you can win €500!

So what do you do? To be honest, the only limits are your own imagination – as an artist you have 1 minute to shock the jury and the public. If you meet that goal, you win!

Flashmob in Lanzarote – July 2010

What is a Flashmob? It is literally where a group of likeminded people all get together, in a public place, for no reason other than to entertain the masses, then disappear. You may have seen things such as this on television – and it really has that WOW factor!

The theme for this one will be dance – choreographed dancing of a crowd. Go and register at the  (Fashion School) in Arrecife. The last test is being run this Saturday at the Fashion School – so phone (in Spanish) 5pm intil 6:30pm.

The rehearsal is on Playa del Reducto on July 18th from 6pm, in the circus tent.

The actual Flashmob event – for all your photographers is Friday 23rd at 6pm, and Saturday 24th at 11am. The exact venue is yet to be determined.

Please contact 928 81 73 77 between 6pm and 8pm for further information. Please speak Spanish, or get someone to translate for you

Another Praying Mantis in Lanzarote

Some time ago we told you about a beautiful visitor to our Lanzarote garden… a Praying Mantis. This was the first time I had ever seen one that wasn’t on my television screen.

Praying Mantis in LanzaroteWell, a few nights ago, Guido was once again very interested in something behind one of our outside doors. We couldn’t see anything – but I happened to remark that the last time it had happened, we’d found the Mantis.

Sure enough, yesterday evening I was laying the table outside for dinner guests, and I looked across and saw one sat on another table. His/her head was held high, and they were extremely interested in what I was doing (fancied some gazpacho and paella no doubt). It wasn’t as large as its predecessor – but still stunning! Our dinner guest was very taken with it… as he hadn’t seen one at close quarters either.

It had either thought that our garden, complete with two inquisitive doggie noses and us with a camera… was preferable to the celebrations in the town centre for Spain winning the World Cup – or it fancied having a extra place set at the table.

Praying Mantis in LanzaroteI had missed out on getting any decent photos of the last one, so Alan did a couple for me today. Click them to see larger.

Of course Alan set it free – expecting it to fly away immediately. But these things really aren’t a timid creature at all. It simply flew to a nearby wall and sat watching Alan for a while before heading off to find a mate (and dependant on gender… eat a head, or lose a head!)

Enjoy!
